It is one of the first questions brides ask, and one of the hardest to find a straight answer to online. So here is ours.

At Mrs. P Stitches, bridal alterations typically range from $900 to $1,400. Every bride receives a clear, written quote before any work begins. No surprises at pickup.

Below, we explain what shapes that number, and what you should expect for it.

Why a wedding gown costs more to alter than a dress

An everyday dress has one or two layers. A wedding gown can have six or more: lining, an inner corset with boning, crinoline, tulle, organza and lace, each cut and finished differently. A hem on a bridal gown is not one hem. It is several, and each must fall at exactly the right length so the layers move together.

Then there is the detail. Beading has to be removed by hand before a seam can move, then sewn back so no one can tell. Lace edges are often cut around the motif and re-appliquéd, stitch by stitch, rather than simply folded under.

That is skilled hand-work, and it takes hours.

What shapes your quote

  • The gown’s construction. Layers, boning, beading and lace all add time.
  • The amount of change. Taking in the sides is different from rebuilding a bodice.
  • The hem. Lace, horsehair braid and multiple layers each need their own finish.
  • The bustle. The number of points depends on the train’s length and weight.
  • Fit adjustments. Straps, bust cups and the waistline all need precision.
  • Your timeline. Weddings under two months away carry a rush surcharge.

What’s included

Your quote covers your guided fittings (most brides need up to three) and all the work agreed on. At your last fitting, we show the person helping you on the day how to bustle your gown.

The consultation is $75 + HST and is waived if you go ahead with us.

When the price is different

Rush alterations. If your wedding is less than two months away, a rush surcharge applies on top of standard work. See rush alterations for the tiers.

Redesign. Changing the neckline, adding sleeves, converting to a corset back or reshaping the silhouette is design work, not alteration. Gown redesigns are quoted separately, to your vision.

Custom gowns. A gown made from scratch, designed around you, is quoted to your design.

Why the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest

A wedding gown can only be cut once. A seam taken in too far, lace cut in the wrong place, or a hem that puckers cannot always be undone. When brides come to us to correct work done elsewhere, the repair can cost more than the original alteration.

When you compare quotes, ask:

  1. Do you only work on bridal gowns?
  2. Is the quote written, and does it include all fittings?
  3. How will you finish my lace or beaded hem?
  4. Who will actually be sewing my gown?

The right answer to all four should give you peace of mind.
